Does place define people or do people define place?
Signalling the Irish Cultural Celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, this event will explore cultural identity and the theme of culture on the move through migration and evolution engaging with the wider communities of Coventry.
Imagineer has worked with local professional artists, schools and community groups to explore and map how migration has had an impact on the cultural development of our city and how each generation’s experience shapes and evolves their cultural identity. The results will take the form of a whole programme of music and dance performances, exhibitions, stories, art installation and the spoken word all adapted for on-line. Originally planned to take place in 2020 live in two Sky Dome Multiplex Venues – JJ’s Club and the Sky Dome Event Space it was postponed due to the pandemic. It will now be streamed on Sunday the 14th at 5pm, staying on-line until and including Wednesday 17th March.
The Irish programme includes Coventry Based artists Joe O’Donnell & his Band – Shkayla, Coventry Comhaltas, The Jackson Sisters, Elite Dance Academy, Celtica, McHale Irish Dance Academy, and Turley Duggan Irish Dance Academy, and the St. Patrick’s Story – re-imagined by Alex Johnson.
Culture on the Move explores the influence migration has had on the cultural development of our city and celebrates and expresses the diversity and creativity that is continually evolving.
For the original project professional Coventry artists Michael Snodgrass, Jo Gane, Ellie Fitton, Luka Owen, Brenda Buijs and artist /teacher Dave Barrett, musicians and choreographers engaged with students from Cardinal Wiseman, Foxford and Bishop Ullathorne Schools and Hereward College, The Mercia Friendship Group, The Claddagh Group, Young at Heart, Grapevine, The Monday Night Makers and other individuals from communities across the City to explore migration in the 1940’s – 60’s and Now.
The project also trained and supported 15 young people who are not in employment, education or training through our Transformations Programme, developing their skills in event management, and production.
