The UK City of Culture has signed up a star attraction for its supporting cast in 2021.
The Telegraph Hotel in Coventry, which is set to open in late autumn, is expected to draw new visitors to the city to sample its celebration of the Mid-century design and styling of the former Evening Telegraph building in the city centre.
The stylish hotel will have 88 bedrooms, meeting and conference facilities, a main bar, a high-quality restaurant and an outdoor rooftop bar.
It retains many of the original aspects of the 1950s architecture of the iconic building and will highlight the best of the ‘Mid-Century Modern style’ movement in interior design.
It is being created by Complex Development Projects and will be operated by Bespoke Hotels, the UK’s leading independent hotel group.
Now the hotel has become the latest member of the 2021 Club joining around 150 other businesses in pledging financial support to the year of celebrations which will see the city become the focus of UK and international attention.
Brian Harrabin, of CDP, said the hotel had already attracted bookings linked to the UK City of Culture celebrations, which will now begin in May after being put back due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The year is going to be a landmark in the history of Coventry and it is very exciting that we are launching the hotel well in time for the 12 months of activities.
“We believe that our design-driven approach to creating a truly unique, Mid-century inspired hotel will not only be a draw in itself but will also allow people to stay in a quality boutique hotel when they come to see 2021 events.
“Retaining those visitors – who might otherwise simply come for the day – is key if the city is to fully realise the economic potential of the UK City of Culture.
“Already the City of Culture has brought investment and energy to Coventry city centre and we very much want to be a part of that and to help ensure its success.”
Nicole Malatesta, Corporate Development Manager of Coventry City of Culture Trust, was given an exclusive tour of the Telegraph Hotel to celebrate it joining the 2021 Club.
She said: “The Telegraph Hotel is going to be an incredible addition to Coventry’s hotel offer and is bringing something very different to the city, so we are delighted to make the formal link between the two organisations.
“The hotel will be stunning, and it is really exciting to see it getting ready to welcome visitors to Coventry for our year as UK City of Culture.
“The new rooftop bar is going to have superb views over Belgrade Square to The Belgrade Theatre and I am sure will be a huge draw for visitors.”
